Ideal Aviation has been providing services to pilots and passengers at St. Louis Downtown Airport since 1983. The company (known as a Fixed Base Operator or FBO) occupies 2 hangars totaling over 25,000 square feet. Ideal provides fuel, maintenance, flight training, aircraft rental, and storage to resident and transient pilots.
Bill Macon, who acquired the company in 2011, is taking the established FBO into the rest of the 21st century. He has completely remodeled the facility including updated pilots’ lounges, flight planning areas, and meeting areas. He also offers flight training, aircraft rental, charter, and sight seeing flights.
Macon’s background is in manufacturing, but he comes from a family with a long history of aviation in St. Louis. In the 1930s and ‘40s Macon’s family owned Von Hoffmann Aircraft Corporation and Von Hoffmann Flying School. Major Albert Lambert (for whom Lambert International Airport is named) was president of the company in its early days. Macon’s mother obtained her pilot’s license in 1943, just past her 17th birthday. She reveled flying her Stinson during her days at Stevens College in Columbia, Missouri, often taking friends on weekend outings to St. Louis and beyond.
Macon is also taking flying lessons and says, “This is a great opportunity for me to combine business with something I’m passionate about!”
